He attended the schools of Mill Creek Township, Mercer County, PA. In 1862 he enlisted in Company B, One Hundred and Fortieth Penn­sylvania Volunteers, and was honorably discharged in 1863. He acted as school director and treasurer of the township. He was a member of the Norval Muse Post, G. A. R., and of the Cochranton Lodge No. 902, I. O. O. F., and voted the Republican ticket.
