During the Civil War he was a member of the One Hundred and Sixty-ninth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He served nine months with the Army of the Potomac; was in several skirmishes and raids, but escaped unscathed, and was honorably discharged.
He was owner of sixty-five acres of well-improved land, mostly cleared by himself. He was a carpenter and joiner, a trade he followed for twenty-five years. In politics he was a Republican.
