He was reared in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, and there was graduated from the high school. He engaged in the printing business about four years, after which he followed the trade of a brick layer in the employ of his father. He joined the union at New Castle, and later received a transfer to the union organization at Butler, where he had located. He withdrew from the union at the time he embarked in the oil business.
He became a successful operator in the oil and gas fields of Butler County, Pennsylvania, and was one of the youngest men in that section so engaged. He resided in a comfortable home in Clearfield Township, where he could be near to his interests. He had twenty-five wells in operation at one time, three of them being gas wells of settled production, the product being marketed to the Standard Plate Glass Works.
He and his wife were members and active workers in the English Catholic church.
