He was a well-known brick contractor of Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.

His father was a soldier of the War of 1812, walking to Erie to join his company under Colonel Prescott. His grandfather was a soldier of the Revolutionary War and was one of the moneyed men of his time, making loans to the Continental Congress.
