He was born in Squirrell Hill, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In early childhood he went with the family to the homestead farm on the Monongahela River, and lived there continuously until his death. When his father died he shared with his brother, Henry, the management of the Deniston estate and had many business interests. He was for many years a director of the Braddock National Bank. As a member of the Swissvale Presbyterian Church, he was among the influential and substantial citizens of the vicinity.
