He attended school until fifteen years of age in his home district schools, then attended the high school at Fredonia, and also one year at Greenville, after which he returned to the farm and there worked until his marriage. He owned a hundred acre farm and carried on a dairy business in connection with his farm, having a herd of fifteen cows. Politically, he was a supporter of the Democratic Party; served multiple terms as assessor and held the offices of auditor and supervisor. In his church relations he was of the Reformed church.
