He paid his way through Buchtel College (now Akron U.), 1893-1897, with part-time employment at the Buckeye Mower & Reaper Works. After graduating, he clerked in the Grant & Sieber law firm in the Buchtel building. In 1901 he joined the Attorney General's office and was successively: special investigator and prosecutor for the U.S. in the Southwest of violators of treaty rights with Indians, examiner into fraudulent practice by officials in U.S. courts, in charge at Chicago of beef trust investigations, New York div. supt. of Bureau of Investigations [FBI]. Resigned 31 Dec. 1918 to enter private law practice. As N.Y. chief of the B.I., Charles F. DeWoody was often in the news: 25 Jan. 1914, denied he received money for Jack Johnson's escape from Chicago; 6 April 1918, reassured against glass in food by plotters; 8 Sept. 1918, report of draft slacker round-up.
