General Notes: Husband - William Jackson "Jack" Hovis

He was born at the home place in Clinton Township, Venango County, PA, and there he lived and worked and did his share in the advancement of the community. When he went to work about the oil wells he had his first experience as a tool dresser at Parker, PA, and he has assisted in the sinking of many wells, being associated for a time with T. W. Phillips, who opened up the field in his home neighborhood. He was later operating in company with J. F. Craig, of Buffalo, as Craig & Hovis, and had twelve producing wells on his father's farm with an average yield of third sand oil, and also sufficient gas to operate the pumps. He was also interested at one time in the M. E. Oil Company, who had one oil well and one gas well, but these were turned over to his son Curtis. Though he never attempted extensive operations he did well, meeting with substantial success. During his residence on his farm south of Clintonville, which was formerly owned by his cousin, J. A. Hovis, he was largely occupied with its cultivation and improvement, putting up all the buildings and developing the property along modern lines. His son Curtis later occupied that place, the father having moved into Clintonville, where he had a pleasant home. He was a good citizen, and though he never sought public honors he served on the school board, handling his responsibilities faithfully and with the same care that he gave to his own concerns. He was a Democrat politically. Like his father he belonged to the M. E. Church, in which he was a steward. [CAB, 989]

General Notes: Wife - Margaret Rosena "Rose" Dick

She may have been married once previous to her marriage to Hovis.
She was the only member of her family in Venango County, PA, in 1919. She was a music teacher before her marriage, and thereafter retained a lively interest in music and in all other activities which contribute to the amenities of life, doing her full share in church and social work.
