General Notes: Husband - Calvin C. Shira

He grew to manhood on the family homestead, was educated in the township schools and the North Washington Academy, and was twenty-two years old when he went to New Castle, PA, where he learned the carpenter trade. In 1884 he moved to Butler and worked as a carpenter for ten years, after which, until 1898, he engaged in a general contracting business. After March of that year he was engaged in the grocery line and had a well stocked store and a satisfactory trade. He was largely interested also in Butler real estate, one of his valuable holdings being his own private residence which was located at No. 319 North Elm Street, Butler.
