He was reared a farmer, but subsequently learned the carpenter's and stairbuilder's trades, which he followed for a few years. He then located on a farm in Penn township, Butler County, PA, which contained seventy acres, and devoted his atten­tion to agriculture. He was a Republican, and served as collector and assessor in his township. Both he and wife were members of the United Presbyterian church, to which denomination his father and grandfather had belonged.
