General Notes: Husband - DeWitt Donaldson

He and his twin brother DeWitt were delivered by their father when he was practicing medicine in the town of Liscomb, IA. Both boys lived with their grandfather and grandmother in Nickleville, PA, for several years after the death of their father. During this period their mother, Adele, attended Normal school in Iowa, so that she could further her teaching career by obtaining a 1st class certificate. They went back to Iowa when they were about 7 years of age. He enlisted in the army during the Spanish American War and served in the U.S. Cavalry in Cuba. On his way home From Cuba he visited his grandfather in Nickleville in 1899, and also his Uncle Heber in Hagerstown, Maryland, and his Uncle Newton in Baltimore. In 1900 he married a young widow and purchased a vegetable farm outside of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and farmed there for several years. He moved to Washington State and then to California around the year 1907. During this time he was briefly in business with his brother in California. He returned to his farm in Iowa and remained in Iowa until about 1914. At this time he and his family moved to Arkansas where he bought into an ax handle factory. He and his two partners operated this through World War I, making ax handles for the U.S. government. He sold out his interest in the factory about 1920 and moved to Ontario, California. Here he became a citrus rancher. It was during this period that he homesteaded land in Arizona, which was later owned and farmed by his grandson Robert Stryker. DeWitt died at the age of 96 at Ontario.
