A Presbyterian minister, after good work in other fields of labor, was called to the charge of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, succeeding the Rev. Dr. Nicholas Murray, in August, 1833. A man of much more than ordinary attainments, he was very successful in his ministry, the duties of which he discharged until his death. His scholarship and ability were recognized by Princeton College, which conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Divinity.

He had eight children, only two of whom (daughters) survived in 1889.
