At the age of sixteen she began the career of a school teacher. She attended Glade Run Academy two terms, also was in attendance at the Normal School at Curwinsville, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. She taught for eight years in Jefferson and Clearfield counties.

Later resided in Potter County, Pennsylvania.
