He spent his boyhood on his father's farm and attended the local schools as he had opportunity. From 1864 until 1872 he was interested in the oil busi­ness in the Western Pennsylvania fields, and in 1885-6 he engaged in manufacturing in Huron County, Ohio. For eight years he was connected with the Standard Plate Glass Company and after retiring from that association he was engaged in a general insurance business, handling risks in about a dozen of the oldest and most re­liable companies in America.
