He was born, reared and educated in Lawrence township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, moving into Ferguson township at the time of his marriage, and he lived there until his death. He owned 150 acres of land which he cleared by his own industry. He survived his wife many years, her death taking place when aged forty-three years, while he lived to be seventy-two years old. They were members of the United Presbyterian church. Their family consisted of seven sons and three daughters.
