General Notes: Husband - Joseph McNeilly

He spent his childhood and youth in his native land, subsequently setting sail for the United States, in the hope and belief that greater opportunities awaited him in the new republic of the west than at home. In this example he was followed by all his brothers, the one sister being the only one to remain in the place of their birth.

After marriage he settled in Scott township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and engaged in farming and gardening on a property of some sixty acres, purchased by him. The place was larger than he cared to manage, however, and he sold a portion of it, and later the remainder, making the latter sale about 1875. In the same year he bought a smaller place of about six and a half acres, in what was then known as West Liberty borough, and lived there. For some time Mr. McNeilly was known as the oldest farmer and gardener in the Pittsburgh region, his farm being eventually included within that city's limits. He was a member of the Republican party and took a keen interest the great questions and issues before the country. Both he and Mrs. McNeilly were members of the United Presbyterian Church.
