General Notes: Husband - Elijah Slaughenhoupt

He was the only child of his parents, was reared in the home of his grandmother Yingling and educated in the public schools. When but a boy he began clerking in a store at West Lebanon, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, returning to Clarion County in 1861. He there became a clerk in the employ of William Moore, of Callensburg, and later was in West Freedom with H. Reil. He had in these several positions become thoroughly familiar with retail mercantile methods and had accumulated sufficient capital to make a start in business for himself. He formed a partnership with Joseph M. Best and with him was for several years engaged in business in Perryville. This partnership was later dissolved and for one year he was associated in business with J. A. Slaughenhoupt. The burning of their store dissolved the firm and until 1909 he was a clerk in West Monterey and Perryville. He was interested in oil production in partnership with two of his sons, but sold out his interest after the accidental death of the eldest. He owned and resided on a small tract of twelve acres lying on the outskirts of Perryville. He was a Republican in politics, and for eleven years served as tax collector. He was a member of Parker Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, also of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and with his wife belonged to the Methodist Episcopal church.
