His education was obtained in the common schools, and he became an eager reader and well-informed man. He was associated in business with his father, but received no assistance from him until he had, by his own unaided efforts, accumulated a considerable amount of property.
He was always a Democrat, and served as school director and road supervisor. He and his wife and four of the children were members of the Methodist Church.
