Eugene Hovis, 79, was Clintonville oil producer
Eugene J. Hovis, 79, of Harrisville RD 1, died in his home this morning, April 9, following an extended illness.
He was born in Clinton Township Oct. 10, 1910, a son of David Ray and N. Sylvia Hoffman Hovis. He attended the Harmony Grove School and was graduated from Clintonville High School in 1929. He was a member of the Clintonville High football team.
He was married to the former Mary Porter on June 27, 1936 and she died May 2, 1989.
Mr. Hovis' first job was carrying mail from Forestville to Clintonville. From 1936 until 1941 he worked in the oil fields in the Bradford area, returning to Venango County in 1941. During World War II and for a time following the war he worked as a machinist at Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. in Franklin.
Later he returned to work in the oil fields in the Clintonville-Harrisville area, making his home in Clintonville. In 1956, he purchased the Porter family farm on Porter Road, south of Clintonville, and continued to make his home there.
In addition to his oil producing business, he operated a machine shop near his home.
Mr. Hovis was a member of the Pennsylvania Independent Petroleum Producers and he was affiliated with the Union Presbyterian and the First United Methodist churches in Clintonville.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. James (Ruth) Hovis of Franklin; two brothers, Raymond Hovis, Clintonville, and Virgil Hovis, Sewickley, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Scott (Vera) McWilliams, Mrs. Chess (Beula) Jacobs, and Mrs. Lawrence (Edith) Hoffman, and two brothers, S. Earl Hovis and William C. Hovis.
Friends will be received in the Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home, Clintonville, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Funeral services will be conducted there at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Margaret Dunlap, retired United Methodist minister, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Howard Gaston of the Union Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in the Clintonville Methodist Cemetery.
