He was brought up at Sligo, Pennsylvania, attended common school and the Clarion State Normal School, also Westminster College, where he graduated in 1896. Five years later he graduated from the Jefferson Medical College, in Philadelphia, receiving the degree of Doctor of Medicine. One year was then spent in the Methodist Hospital, Philadelphia. In the fall of 1902 he engaged in practice at Sligo, where he remained, and was very successful. He was a member of the County, State and American Medical societies. He was a member of Clarion Lodge, No. 277, Free and Accepted Masons. He was a Republican. His church was the Presbyterian.
