General Notes: Husband - Enoch Wright

He was born on the home farm in Peters township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and was reared to agricultural pursuits. He was but a boy when his father was killed. He married but only one of their children, Joseph, grew to maturity.
He was an active man, enjoying robust health. For over thirty years he was a justice of the peace. He participated in the "Whiskey Insurrection" in 1794, opposing the rising, as he was in favor of paying the tax imposed, and firmly held to his position, even in the face of threatening letters received by him, some of them conveying notice that his buildings would be burned did he not join the insurrectionists. He was by no means easily persuaded, but finally he reluctantly united himself on the side of the Rebellion, and after the shooting of one man, he entered with zeal into it. He served as county commissioner, was director of the poor, and during his incumbency he superintended the building of the first poor house in the county. He was a member of the Baptist Society, and gave the lands and means for the building of a church. Being a strong anti-slavery man he had it inserted in the deed for this property that no slavery doctrine or sentiments should be preached or discussed in the church. When the church divided he transferred his membership, and deeded land and building to the Methodist Society.

He was a capable man, possessed of a large amount of real estate, on a part of which Finleyville was built and was a very wealthy man for his times. He was Justice of the Peace for over 30 years, County Commissioner and Director of the Poor, and took an active part in the Whiskey Insurrection, though at first opposed to it. He was originally a Baptist, and built a church on his own land to be used by all Evangelical churches. He later became a Methodist.

General Notes: Wife - Rachel James

She survived her husband nearly twenty years, and died at the age of ninety.

Familiarly known in the family as "Granny," she was a woman of direct and forceful speech; not an educated woman, but one whose life was an influence against subterfuge and petty deceit. In 1844 she met with an accident which left her a cripple for life, and a few years later she lost her eyesight, but with all these afflictions she was cheerful and uncomplaining.
