General Notes: Husband - John R. Pantall

He had only the advantages of the common schools in his youth. He assisted in the work of the home farm until seventeen years of age when he engaged in the lumber business, and, for thirty years, he followed that pursuit, bringing to himself a comfortable competence. His labors were interrupted in 1864 by his enlistment in Company B, 74th P. V. I., in which he served until the close of the war. Returning to his home Mr. Pantall resumed lumbering, which he followed continuously until 1894. During all that time he carried on his farm and engaged in stock dealing.
He moved to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, in 1891, and came to be the owner of valuable property there. He was one of the organizers of the First National Bank of Punxsutawney. For many years he was identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. In politics he was always an ardent Democrat, and came within forty-two votes of being elected county sheriff at a time when the county was largely Republican. A friend of education, he gave to his children excellent advantages in that direction.
He and his wife were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, in which Mr. Pantall served as elder.
