He was a student of Glade Run Academy and graduated at Washington and Jefferson College and the Western Theological Seminary, at Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. After marriage he and his wife resided in Allegheny City where he was pastor of the Sixth Presbyterian church.

He was a professor in the Western Theological Seminary, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, and later pastor of a Presbyterian congregation at Clarksburg, West Virginia.
