General Notes: Husband - Melvin Marsteller

After his school days had ended, he assisted his parents on the farm for six years, and he then married and, moving to Sandy Creek Township, bought the old McCracken farm and converted the place into one of the most valuable estates of the township. In the mean-time he added thereto seven acres of adjoining land, and in addition to his general farming he also conducted a well paying sugar camp and a dairy. He was a Republican in his political affiliations and held all of the township offices and was for fifteen years a member of the school board.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Sheakleyville Lodge No. 592, and he served as the noble grand of that body, and was also a member of the Patrons of Husbandry and of the State Grange. He served as the master of New Vernon Grange, No. 608, and he also served as a delegate to its state conventions. Both he and his wife were members of the Methodist church, she being a member of its Foreign Missionary Society and the treasurer of its Ladies' Aid, while he was one of the trustees of the church, and he was also a class leader in and the superintendent of the Sunday school and president of District 5 of the Sabbath School Association. Following in the footsteps of his honored father, he was an abstainer of tobacco and a stanch advocate of Prohibition principles. [HMC 1909, 1021]
