He was born on the homestead farm in Butler township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and has always resided thereon. In 1864 he enlisted in Company A, Sixth Pennsylvania Artillery, and served until the close of the war. He then resumed his duties upon the farm. Politically, he was a Republican, and was an adherent of the United Presbyterian church. He was a member of the G. A. R., and also of the I. O. O. F.
