He was reared and educated in Sugar Grove Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He and his wife settled on a part of his father's homestead, where they spent the most of their days. For many years he was a local preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Politically he was a Prohibitionist, with Republican pro-clivities. [HMC 1888, 1133]
