General Notes: Husband - William Leader Sansom

He was born in McConnellsburg, Fulton County, Pennsylvania, and was eight years old when his parents moved to Indiana County. It was there that he received his education, leaving school at the age of fourteen and entering the office of the Indiana Democrat, then published by his father. There he remained seven years, acquiring that thorough knowledge of the printing and publishing business which laid the foundation of his future career and gaining a fund of most valuable experience. At the age of twenty-one he was appointed to a clerkship in the office of the auditor-general, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a position which he retained for six years. His inclinations, however, led him to re-enter the newspaper field, and in July, 1880, he purchased a one-half interest in the Jeffersonian Democrat, of Brookville, Pennsylvania, Major John McMurray being the owner of the other half. In 1889 Mr. Sansom purchased his partner's interest, Major McMurray going to Clarion county, where he became associated with the publication of the Clarion Democrat. In 1890 Mr. Sansom and Major McMurray exchanged properties, the former coming to Clarion and the latter going to Brookville. Since that time the Clarion Democrat has been most successfully conducted by Mr. Sansom and his able coadjutor, Mr. Reed, who was identified with the paper from 1885 to 1901, when Mr. Sansom purchased his interest, becoming sole proprietor.
He was particularly interested in the cause of education and served as a director of the Clarion public schools. He was president of the Borough Council for some years. In politics he was an able exponent of Democratic principles, having acted as delegate to state conventions and also to the national convention of 1912. He was affiliated with the Masonic fraternity, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Knights of Pythias. He and his family were members of the Methodist Episcopal church.
