He was educated at Allegheny College, after which he entered the employ of the Westinghouse Company at Pittsburgh as an electrical draughtsman. He served ten months during the Spanish-American War, having enlisted in Company B, Pennsylvania Volunteers. Like his father he was a member of the Episcopal church.
