While a young man he spent a couple of years clerking in Calvin Mathews store. At his father's death he inherited his last farm. While he lived on this place, his brother, George, and younger sisters, Maggie and Nancy, lived with him. After some years he sold this place and spent some time in the oil regions. Later he returned to Mercer County.
