He was reared on a farm, and at an early period in his life was employed as a clerk in a store. He operated a mercantile store in Mercer, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He was superintendent of the Sabbath-school of the First Presbyterian Church of Mercer for over thirty-five years, and was an elder. [HMC 1888, 702]
