He was educated in the common schools, and beginning in 1864 resided on a farm of seventy acres in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, where he made a specialty of growing small fruits.
He held several township offices, among them those of supervisor, school director and assessor. In politics he was a Republican. He and his wife were members of the United Brethren church; they had seven children.
