General Notes: Husband - Harrison Laird Bell

He passed the major portion of his childhood in the neighborhood of the old Bell homestead at Bell's Mill in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. As a lad he attended the public schools of South Huntingdon township, but was later sent by his parents to the schools of West Newton and still later to those of Greensburg. Upon completing his studies at the last named institutions, he secured a position with the Sewickley Mutual Insurance Company and remained associated with that concern in the capacity of solicitor for a number of years. At the time when the business of supplying the community with natural gas for lighting purposes first began, Mr. Bell engaged in that line for a time and met with considerable success. It was in the year 1887 that he first became connected with the railroads in that part of the state when he took a position as locomotive fireman on the Pennsylvania Railroad. In the year 1891 he was promoted to the position of freight engineer and served in that capacity for thirteen years. In 1904 he was promoted to the passenger service, and was operating a passenger locomotive on the Altoona &. Pittsburgh Division. It was in the year 1887 that Mr. Bell first came to Scottdale and made his home in that city and during the thirty years that followed he participated most prominently in the general life of the community. Mr. Bell was a Democrat in politics, and was closely identified with the local organization of his party for many years. He held a number of offices within the gift of his fellow-citizens, and was the first assessor of the First Ward of Scottdale, after the division of the city into wards. In his religious belief Mr. Bell was a Presbyterian and attended the First Church of that denomination in Scottdale. Mr. Bell was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and was the organizer of the first order of locomotive firemen on the southwest branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He took a very active part in the work of these organizations, and for twelve years served as a member of the grievance committee of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and for one year as chairman of that body. In the year 1898 he was the delegate for Derry and Scottdale to the National Convention of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers held at St. Louis, Missouri. He was also a member of the local lodges of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Improved Order of Heptasophs. His chief recreation was in the outdoor life, and he was especially fond of the sport of hunting, in which he spent his vacations. [ONW, 970]
