General Notes: Husband - William Bell

After completing a public school education he worked with his father in the grist mill until November 5, 1861, when he enlisted in Company K, 101st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry for service in the Civil War. Serving at first as a private, he was promoted to corporal, sergeant and sergeant major and eventually received a commission as first lieutenant for "gallant and meritorious conduct." When his term of enlistment expired in 1864 he re-enlisted for three years or for the duration of the war, and in April, 1864, he was captured at Plymouth, North Carolina. For ten months he was confined in the prison at Andersonville and being then exchanged, he was honorably discharged at Newbern, North Carolina, on January 25, 1865, and returned home broken in health. He never recovered from the rigors of prison life, but, although a partial invalid, worked at his trade as a miller for the rest of his life. He was a Republican and a Lutheran.
