He was born in North Franklin Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, where during his early life he engaged in farming and stock raising, but after moving to Washington was for a number of years street commissioner, and at the time of his death was National Pike Commissioner.

He was a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted with the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry, served through the war and was discharged at the close of the war with the rank of First Sargeant.
