Clyde Orton Pryor was born on a farm in Rockland twp. Venango County, Penna. When he was two years old his father died and he moved with his mother to the Daniel D. Nickle, his grandfather's farm where he lived until he married. After he was sixteen the farm work depended on him. After he married he left the farm and went to Conewango Valley, N.Y. where he was associated with Arthur Sweet in the mercantile business. He was not engaged in this business very long until he came back on the farm as the work was too much for his mother and sister to take care of and help was hard to get. After the death of his Grandfather, December 24, 1909 the farm was sold and Clyde went into the store business again with his father-in-law Newton Berlin. They bought the general store at Van, Penna. where he lived and worked until the death of his wife, Edna January 14, 1912. After his second marriage he sold his interest in the store and entered the employ of the United Natural Gas Company. For a few years they lived on a small farm near Coal City and then he bought the house and lot formerly owned by Dr. Carey at Maple Shade where he spent the remainder of his life.
For a number of years he was a roustabout for the company but later they gave him a position in the Company office at Van where he was employed until his death.
He united with the Methodist Church when he was a small boy and continued a faithful active member during his entire life. While living at Van there being no Church there he and Mr. Berlin obtained a large tent where they had Sunday School and had preaching service whenever the could obtain a minister. After he moved to Maple Shade he was one of the foremost men to bring about building of the Methodist Church at Van and he was one of the energetic workers from the start to the finish of the building and just as energetic in the spiritual building as in the material. He was a teacher of the men's Bible class when his work was suddenly brought to an end here and was promoted to work in the Great Beyond.
During his employment in the gas company's office at Van it became almost a daily occurrence for some of his fellow workmen to stop in and talk over some religious problem and have him pray with them. Any of his neighbors who were sick or in trouble could always find a friend in him.
He never took his family to the movies as he said he couldn't afford it and he felt they wouldn't be benefited either spiritually or morally by attending but he would take them to Church services far or near and they are all active Christians now.
In January, 1932 he was stricken with flu followed by pneumonia and was sick only a short time.

Clyde Orton Pryor, aged 54 years, one of the best known and most highly respected residents of the Van district, died at his home at Maple Shade late Wednesday afternoon. He had been ill for the past week, with pneumonia. Mr. Pryor was born at Rockland on November 21, 1880, the son of Lowell and Ellen Nickle Pryor, and had spent his entire life in this county. He conducted the store, known as Berlin and Pryor at Van for many years, and 17 years ago entered the employ of the United Natural Gas Company. He had been engaged in that capacity ever since.
He was a man of good character, known and loved by all in the community. He was active in the affairs of the Van Methodist Episcopal Church, was a teacher of the Men's Bible Class, and at the time of his death held the office of treasurer of the church.
Surviving are his widow, Lorrie Rote Pryor; one son, Emerson J. Pryor, of Meadville, and the following children at home: Isabel, Genevieve, Ruby and Clifford. One grandson, Jackie Pryor, of Meadville, and three sisters also survive: Mrs. C. W. Burgwin, of Guys Mills; Mrs. E. A. Baggs and Mrs.Harry McElwain , of Conewango Valley, N.Y. together with his aged uncle, Rev. O. H. Nickle, of Seneca.

Clyde spent his entire life in Venango County. He conducted the store known as Berlin and Pryor, at Van for many years. About 1915 he began working for the United natural Gas Company. He was active in the affairs of the Van Methodist Episcopal Church, where he taught Men's Bible classes. At the time of his death he was treasurer of the church.
