General Notes: Husband - Daniel Dodd

He came out to Washington County, Pennsylvania, soon after his brother, Thaddeus Dodd, and settled near him. His name is mentioned in the survey of Jacob Cook and others as adjoining them. He purchased land which Nehemiah Scott patented, and where the village of Amity was later located, and laid out that town in 1797. He also purchased land adjoining that of John Carmichael, which was part of a tract patented by Carmichael and known by the name of "Cook's Delight." On this land Henry Wick at the time of purchase had a distillery. In 1799, Dodd sold the land to Wick. Mr. Dodd lived on the farm till his death. [HWC 1882, 654]

He was an "all-round" mechanic and builder.
After the close of the Revolutionary war, he and his brother, Thaddeus, left the neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey, and pushed out to Washington County, Pennsylvania, with intent to establish a Presbyterian College and settlement. While Thaddeus preached the Gospel, Daniel built a saw-mill, established a pottery, and built a log school house in which his clerical brother began teaching in 1782. This laid the foundation of Washington Academy, chartered in 1787, and of which Dod was chosen the first principal. Out of this movement grew Washington College, and, by its merger with Jefferson, Washington and Jefferson College.

He had six daughters and one son. [HWC 1882, 654] But other sources indicate that he was the father of the other sons listed. But Daniel Freeman Dodd was apparently the only one who remained in Washington County and perhaps that accounts for the discrepancy.
